OPPORTUNITY: In History of Graphic Design, the designers were assigned groups of four to complete a magazine or publication design. Each group was assigned a style from the history of graphic design as well as a list of designers from that style that were required to be in the publication. The bio of each designer from designishistory.com was required in the publication, and the designers were responsible for finding or creating additional content. This publication is about Sixties Modern design and the required designers were Lou Dorfsman, Ikko Tanaka, Robert Brownjohn, Wolfgang Weingart, Yusaku Kamekura, Ivan Chermayeff & Tom Geismar, George Lois, and Shigeo Fukuda.
SOLUTION: This is an educational publication created for The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). It would be used by high school students in the New York area in their classrooms to prepare for a class trip to an exhibition about 60s Counterculture at the museum. MoMA was selected as the publication because Chermayeff & Geismar designed the branding for the MoMA during the 1960s. The goal of the publication is to teach students about how designers responded to the social and political conflict and unrest of the 60s so they can take that information and relate it to the current conflict and unrest in the world. The publications would be delivered as part of a PR package that would also include items such as stickers and lanyards that would have QR codes, giving the students access to the exhibit as well as some behind-the-scenes privileges. MoMA merchandise was also designed for this publication to create the full package: water bottles, t-shirts, tote bags, and leather-bound notebooks.
